Katrina MacKew

I am a Chatham-Kent native and graduate of York University holding a BFA with honours in Visual Arts Studio. My main concentration lies in painting and print making, but I am always open to working in all kinds of mediums and exploring all sorts of different subject matter. I am constantly looking to bring new levels of possibilities to my craft.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Lately my current body of work has come to illustrate environmental concern by transforming waste and debris into aesthetic through the act of print making. Seeing myself as a painter as well as a print maker, I try to incorporate a raw, even crude manner, of how I present these elements into my work. I am an intentionally messy artist. My painting and my print making methods hold a strong intuitive sensibility to align themselves with surrealist art making. I choose to create unexpected juxtapositions; fragmentation and disorder. More often than not I find myself incorporating both abstract and figurative elements into my work creating a sense of ambiguity. While I use a variety of materials my methodology in my work often remains consistent. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects I have worked on they are often linked together by recurring themes of environment, feminist principles; stylized use of color and abstracted spaces.
