Connecting art and people in Chatham-Kent

Patty Henderson’s work in mixed media utilizes hand-painted, found, and torn-paper collage with a variety of acrylic paint methods to capture inspiring rural results. The jigsaw puzzle of colour, text and media within Henderson’s pieces unite to create one rich, vibrant subject. Birds, fish, foxes and the diverse animals of the Chatham-Kent countryside are the frequent subjects of Henderson’s multi-layered artistic story.

Patty Henderson is an accomplished collage and mixed media artist from Wallaceburg, Ontario, and the great grandniece of renowned Canadian Landscape artist Homer Watson. Henderson’s work features the diversity of rural animals and birds of Chatham-Kent. Henderson has worked with watercolour artist Margaret Roseman, and contemporary artist and author Mary Todd Beam. Henderson’s work is inspired by the rich textual collage work of Elizabeth St. Hilaire.

Henderson’s collage paintings have been celebrated in several juried art exhibitions, winning the jury award in the First Annual Wallaceburg and District Historical Society’s Juried Art Exhibition (2013). She was also the recipient of an Honourable Mention in the, online juried competition, in the theme, ‘Flowers, Plants and Gardens’ (2015).

Henderson’s foundational memories include time spent at a childhood cottage in Rondeau Provincial Park, on the shores of Lake Erie, relishing in the exploration of woods, sand, birds and frogs. She enjoyed drawing and doodling throughout elementary and secondary school, later receiving her Medical Laboratory Technology diploma which became her career. In 2002, Henderson began painting with watercolours. Her artwork evolved in a new direction when she discovered collage art, or ‘paper paintings’, in 2009. Her first experiment with tearing up and gluing pieces of failed watercolours led to a love of this jigsaw collage of text, colour, paper, paint and natural subjects. Each piece is a multi-layered story. Henderson’s studio is at home in Wallaceburg, Ontario, and she is an exhibiting member at Art Space Gallery in Chatham, Ontario.
